Regular vs Bamboo Pillow

Regular pillow vs bamboo pillow

Bamboo Pillow

Taking a closer look to the build and materials of your pillows may give you some help when choosing one type or another.

The regular pillow

The pillow covering is going to be build first. It may be made of some thick, sturdy cotton or cotton-polyester fabric, but you may find other options too.

A cotton pillow is going to be a safe choice for many, even though it may not be the most breathable option out there. It’s easy to clean and to take care of, just keep in mind to wash it cold when in need.

You may want to go with a thick cotton pillow for a buckwheat pillow as it’s thick and rugged enough to take the weight of the buckwheat hulls and the intense use that buckwheat hulls may provide.

Cotton blend is also a regular option and it may impress many as it’s more breathable than cotton and doesn’t stain as much as a cotton pillow. It may come with memory foam or shredded memory foam filling, offering good comfort.

The cheapest option for a regular pillow would be one with a cotton blend sham and polyester filling. Even though it may serve you well for a while, don’t expect much of it. You get what you payed for.

What about bamboo pillows?

Bamboo pillows come in fact with bamboo cover and bamboo isn’t used as a filling for pillows. So when you’re getting a bamboo pillow, you’re getting in fact one that has a cover made of bamboo, and not the filling.

The market is full of pillows advertised as bamboo pillows when in fact they’re not bamboo at all (not their filling, anyway).

The other side of bamboo pillows

Bamboo pillows contain minimal bamboo, in most situations. They contain, however, memory foam which we all know it’s not quite the healthiest option that also traps your body heat, leaving you with an uncomfortable sleep.

You may also get the shredded memory foam option that comes encased within a cover that contains a bamboo-derived material, aka “viscose rayon”. The rayon is in fact removed from bamboo.

The viscose process, a common process that turns bamboo into rayon, requires spinning bamboo fiber in carbon disulfide, which is toxic and linked to developmental effects and even cancer.

Let’s not forget the part about the processes that produces rayon, which isn’t quite eco-friendly. The recovery of carbon disulfide is 50% in most factories, so you need to wonder where the other 50% is going.

Don’t fall for the “hypoallergenic” label either. There are no standards for manufacturers to use the term “hypoallergenic” for describing any of their products. Any company may very well label its product as hypoallergenic, without even testing it.

The good parts about the bamboo pillows

As far as we know, bamboo pillows may reduce back or neck pain. They may also alleviate pain but comfort is quite a personal matter so what works for you, may not work for others too.

Pillow Top versus Plush

Pillow top versus plush

Pillow tops

Gone are the days when you didn’t have many options in the mattress area and you can choose nowadays from so many models. From the firm mattresses, the plus mattresses, to the euro-top (aka the box-top), or the pillow-top mattresses, it’s impossible not to find the perfect model that fits your needs and budget.

Back in the days, you could only find the coil spring mattresses and it wasn’t like you had to spend much time for choosing. There is an impressive variety of options on the market today so you need to spend more time and energy for selecting the right model for you. You also need to give a thought about all of its attributes and see for yourself if that’s the right model for you or not. Do you want your mattress to be firm or soft? Would you like better a plush or a pillow top? Should you go with a traditional coil-spring or get a memory foam types?

You don’t have the compromise when selecting a mattress as you need to feel comfortable in it so you do get a good sleep until the morning. Getting the right mattress is fundamental for your sleep, too.

The types of mattresses

Most of the mattresses out there today are made with memory foam. First used by NASA, memory foam ensures great support to your body as it’s made to respond to your body heat and shape. Therefore, it’s going to soften in the areas where they’re warmer and the foam that touches the cooler parts is going to remain firmer. Some people also get a floating feeling when using this type of mattress.

The memory foam mattress brings comfort to any back problems, alleviates painful joints and sustain an optimal spinal alignment.

As for the coil springs mattresses, they are a talk of the past, but they are going to be forever the first type of mattress that gave back support. They contain coil springs that are supportive for your back. The higher the coil count, the firmer your mattress is going to be.

Let’s not forget the latex foam mattress that is durable and may be custom made so that it fits your body shape perfectly. A latex foam mattress isn’t the cheapest option to get so don’t go shopping on an empty wallet.

The pillow top and the plush

Despite of some may think, they’re not the same thing. A plush mattress has one to 4 inches of extra-layers on top of a firm mattress. The more padding it has, the softer it’s going to be.

A pillow-top mattress is not as firm as a plush mattress, but it’s rather soft. Unlike the plush that features additional layers, the pillow-top mattress comes with a cushion-like pillow top that protects the mattress.

If you’re only planning to add more softness to your mattress, a plush mattress is the best option to try. When you’d rather go with a fluffy bed, you may want to go with a pillow-top.

For those of you who are looking for more back support, the plush mattress is a better choice.

Keep in mind that pillow-top mattresses aren’t as cheap as the plush ones and you can’t flip them over for extending their lifespan. You may also need bigger sheets since they’re quite thick also.

Pillow Sham versus Pillowcase

Pillow sham versus pillowcase

Pillow cases

You’re not the first one to wonder about the difference between a pillow sham and a pillow case. As a matter of fact, this question is quite common, but truth is that they’re not quite the same thing.

They are both slip cover for your bed pillows, but they do have different purposes. They’re designed differently so they highlight your bed linens in different ways.

What is a pillowcase?

A pillowcase is a bit more functional as it’s designed to be slept on, serving as an extra layer that you use to sleep on.

A pillowcase is going to protect your pillow from hair and skin oil, but also from drool and perspiration.

Typically, a pillow case is made from the same fabric as your bed’s fitted or flat sheet and it’s created to be a perfect match for them. Most of the pillowcases out there are made of a plain colors, but you may also find models with patterned trimmings.

What about a pillow sham?

Pillow shams are a bit more decorative and you may use them only to bring a fun or elegant vibe to your bedroom. You’re not going to use the pillow shams for sleeping. They’re created and made to add a nice feel to a room, while complementing the bedding.

A pillow sham is designed to match the comforter, coverlet, quilt or duvet cover. Another thing that sets them apart from the pillowcases is that they may decorated with embroidery or ornate laces, showing a lot more sophisticated patterns that pillowcases would show.

It’s also quite common for the shams to be made of thicker fabrics and even padded so that they may lie atop your comforter or bedspread. They also feature zippers in the middle and that’s also the insertion point of your pillow.

When you’re in need to add some flair to a room that looks kind of dull, put your money at stake with some pillow shams.

The pillow shams are quite versatile and you may use them as pillowcases also. They’re a bit more expensive than the pillowcases though as they’re made from more expensive fabrics as you don’t want to use them for sleeping, but only for the show.

In a nutshell

Pillowcases and pillow shams do sound alike and do look alike quite a lot. However, you may want to use a pillowcase to cover your sleeping pillows, whereas you’re going to use a pillows ham for decorative purposes alone.

To make it easier for you, here are the main things to keep in mind:

The pillowcases

  • Contain a flange or an opening
  • Open at one end
  • They’re made to protect your pillow
  • You may sleep on them

As for the pillow shams, here’s the short list:

  • All four sides may finish with cording or flange
  • They feature tuck flap on the back
  • They’re mainly decorative
  • They’re a bit more expensive

As if all of these wasn’t enough, don’t forget about the Euro Sham. This is a square pillow that comes with an ornamental cover and works as a regular pillow sham, but may also be used as a throw.
